Is my AC adapter still working?

My MacBook Pro has not been used for quite a while. Now I want to use it again but it will not charge. Is there a way to check if the external adapter is still working? If I can confirm that this is not the problem, then I don't need to look any further because then the computer has to be checked. Thanks for any input !

Have you tried resetting the SMC? https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Thanks for you input, but there is no way to reset the SMC if the computer is dead . If the computer is total loss, I don't want to spend any money on a new power adapter. If the problem is the adapter then that is no problem, but I need a way to figure out which of the two is causing the problem.

do you have another charger or a friend with one? See if touch can charge your Mac with theirs,

That's the problem, not many people in Belgium own a MacBook, so do don't know anyone from whom I could borrow a adapter. Thanks for you input.

The MagSafe cord has a LED which turns Amber when the battery is charging and Green when the battery is charged. If you don't see the LED lit you likely have a bad charger or the MacBook power connection is dirty.

Here's a good reference on what to look for and how to check things out: Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters.

The LED on the adapter does not go on in either color. Since the compter hasn't been used in over 6 months, the battery is completely dead. The only thing I can do, in order to determine weither the computer or the adapter aren't working, is to physically test the adapter. How can I test the actual output of the adapter? If had known someone with a MacBook, I could easily test the adapter on his/her computer, but I don't! Anyone who can tell me how to test the adapter please? Thanks for your suggestions.

Check the AC cord The MagSafe LED not lighting tells me either its dead or the connection to the system is not making contact. Did you review the Apple T/N I posted above? If you did and don't see any problems then I would get a new power adapter.

by

Thanks, but I did review the Apple T/N you posted, and did not get a solution. My question is, I thought, rather simple, is there a way to check the power adapter's output without linking it with a computer?

by

Not really... you would need to probe the MagSafe contacts which you would more likely short out damaging the unit. Most of us who fix systems have a spare DC-In Board which has the connector to then probe to check the MagSafe adapter. If that checked out then it’s reviewing the schematics & board layout drawings to locate the power rails and testing them.

Thanks Dan, I have a spare DC-In Board. But how do I go at it to check the power supply ?
