My keyboard started skipping characters randomly
I have an HP Pavilion running vista, I've switched out 3 new keyboards and all do the same.

Bill have you taken your keyboard to another computer and checked to see if it works? What type of keyboard is it, i.e.wireless, bluetooth, ps2, USB etc. also make sure that you check on malware, viruses, and start your computer in safe mode and see if the keyboard gives you trouble. Is it with all programs or just certain ones. You could try to restore and see if that changes things for you.
