Why is my shift display on the tank not reading proper gear

2013 C90T boulevard; shift display on tank inaccurate; when shifting the display rolls through all 5 numbers. i.e. when in first gear display reads '2'. when in 2nd, 3rd, 4th the display will run through all the numbers and finally stop on a random number. Coinciding with this malfunction my bike engine 'misses' when shifting. I'm sure the two are related. Dealer suggested it might be the "sensor" that talks to the "ECU" (?) not sure what either of them are.

The sensor is the shift sensor That tells the bike what gear its in . It is also used as a speed sensor for you speedometer . The ECU is the onboard computer and it controls the electrical system on the bike . If the speed sensor if not working right it could cause several problems . one your seeing now with the gear indicator not working . It can also cause a speedo problem . It can also cause missfires in the engine as the info regarding how much fuel is sent to the motor and when to fire the cylinder could be off when the bike doesnt get the proper info on speed . Replacing the speed or shift sensor will probably fix these problems. Hope this helps
