How do you image hard drive without commercial software?

you can use the winpe boot environment. it's free, download it from microsoft and make a boot disk. boot with that and use the imagex utility to clone the hard drive to a microsoft .wim image.

using the same winpe boot disk, boot a pc and image the drive with imagex.

use diskpart and dism utilities to manipulate partitions, etc...
