The apple store told us hard drive is no good that is why it would not take upgrade, the Mac book pro-2009/2.26Ghz keeps asking to download. Upgrade will not do anything else. Never worked on Mac before, only Microsoft. Finally erased Mac hard drive, reinstalled Mac os x install DVD, now Safari. Keeps stopping.

What are you trying to upgrade from and to?

EXACTLY which machine do you have?

Is it the Mid 2009 selected in the icon?

If it is the Mid 2009, it will not take either Sierra or High Sierra.

macOS High Sierra has the same requirements as its predecessor:

  • iMac: late 2009 or newer.
  • MacBook/MacBook (Retina): late 2009 or newer.
  • MacBook Pro: mid-2010 or newer.
  • MacBook Air: late 2010 or newer.
  • Mac Mini: mid-2010 or newer.
  • Mac Pro: mid-2010 or newer.
  • iMac Pro: 2017.

While updating, are you 100% sure the WiFi doesn't go on idle or that you're not on low battery?

If not, restart the pc and try again,

Also if this is MacOS High Sierra that you're updating to, it will not work as your MacBook Pro is Mid 2009 and minimum is Mid 2010 or newer.

Can you not refuse upgrade and still keep system working. As all it wants to do is upgrade as soon as powered on??

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you're saying.

We're always given the option to refuse updates but I don't get what it has to do with your problem, as your question was why it keeps stopping on update.

On powerup, the system automatically checks for incoming updates and then asks you to update, there might be an option where you can disable that but I'm not sure as I most likely run a different OS than you (Mac OS El Capitan)
