How to force the DFU mode

I can put my phone in the DFU mode, however once I attach it to the power supply (and therefore disconnect from iTunes) it brings itself back into the normal boot. I would like to probe the logic board with the multimeter in the DFU mode, but I find it difficult. Is there a way to keep the phone in the DFU mode? One option that came up to my mind would be to keep it connected to iTunes while probing. Or am I doing something wrong altogether and the phone should stay in the DFU mode?

Because I failed several times to put it into the DFU mode while at the power supply and I assumed this was impossible. Now with the positive attitude given by you I have succeeded immediately. Thanks.

Are you actually sure this works? I think that my excitation was premature: the DFU mode turned out to be disconnected screen, and I cannot succeed with that despite numerous attempts.
