New drive shows only the old drive's capacity, can I fix it?

I installed a new 500GB on macbook pro. Mirror image was done. After installation, info shows only the original 160GB. Using Disk Utility, i tried increasing the partition to the 500GB but a message says "mediakit reports partition (map) too small.

Do i have to reinstall OS?

Use disk utilities from your system installation disk and format the new drive first. By doing the mirror before formatting you set it to the same size as the original drive. After the format give it one partition. Now you can clone using something like SuperDuper.
