I got the specifications from Apple on the exact RAM i needed to purchase. I followed all the instuctions on how to install it but the mac doesn't recognize it. any thoughts?

If it sees it in slot #1 and not in slot#2 the slot is most likely bad. Try re-seating a couple of times and using just one chip at a time.
