Successful Boot but still black screen

My wife's backpack with her laptop fell off her chair this afternoon before coming home. She didn't think much of it because it didn't seem like a hard fall.

Nevertheless, she gets home and we've got dead video on the device.

The computer is booting up fine and seems perfectly functional (hooked it up to the TV via HDMI), but the LCD is black. The LCD is powering on/the backlight is coming on but it just doesn't seem to be getting a signal.

I've tried power cycling but that's about it. I've got a bad feeling this is beyond my ability to repair, but maybe I'm wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi @oldmanmerton ,

What is the model number of the laptop?

You can search online looking for Dell Inspiron (insert model number) service manual to download the manual for your laptop.

This will detail the procedure on how to dis-assemble the laptop so that you can check the video cable connection at the motherboard and also the LCD screen to ensure that it hasn't been jarred loose. Hopefully it will be something as simple as this.

It is a good sign that you can get an external monitor display as this signifies that the GPU is still OK

5548 is the specific model. It looks like a beast to fully disassemble but I guess I'll give it a go tomorrow and see what I can find.
