makes a funny noise on boot

i am buying a used macbook. it makes a funny noise (my kid says, who has one of her own, that does not make that noise I assume) I am new to Mac. Also the plug is quite worn. Her boyfriend says its a good machine. I will buy it for $550 or $600 if it's all good. shall i take it to an apple store to have them check it out? I'd love to have it. For this price would it be worth it even if it has a few problems?

Hi! What does the noise sound like? I just read the whole thread and I don't see any description of the noise...if you could please describe it, that would help a lot.

Here's a link to the AC adapter you need:

the noise is right when I turn it on. it sounds like a whirring, quick clicking rrrrrrrrrrr sound. then it stops, hard to describe by writing. Thanks for all the help on this website. I took it to the Genius Bar at Apple store. He told me it was the optical drive/disc drive starting up, expalaining it has a lot of functions to perform when the start button is pressed. He assured me it is normal.

The fact that my daughter has a 17 inch MBP the same age and hers does not do that bothers me a little bit. That said, I will enjoy this machie for quite a while with no problems, I hope! He even said the AC adapter should not not be a problem. Did not even try to sell me anything, which i was very surprised about. I might just buy the adapter now, so when it doesd go out I will have an extra without making a trip to the apple store. Thanks to you all.

Good. hey, wasn't there a firmware update that stopped the drive buzzing? Make sure you have the latest software and firmware.

I will double check, but I think he updated everything the day before he gave the computer to me. Will look on the history ,next time I turn that computer on again. Thanks for the info.

It is a good price, does it work? Is it just a noise or is the noise because of other issues? I wouldn't worry about the power cable. If you go to an Apple Store they'll be very keen for you to buy a new Mac, they have to live! Make sure it's running Snow Leopard or Leopard OS, else you'll be a few years back before you've even started!

The firmware update was targeting the optical drive noise when waking from sleep, when the machine is booted the drive will always make noise. If you noticed, prior to the update the machine would make a the same sounds when waking from sleep as it did on boot up, that was eliminated by the update, but when booting the sound persists.

this doesn't answer your original question, but you mentioned LimeWire - I'd uninstall that ASAP and instead use Transmission - far, far more stable application than LW on the Mac if you need something like that

my kid uses Limewire all the time on her Mac, no problems. Why is it acting this way on this one, I don't know. Thanks for your suggestion. I leave the uninstall to her boyfriend for now, since AI have not officially bought it yet.

it works and it has Leopard. Lst night we tried toshutdown, and Limewire canceled the shutdown, and we can't shut down limewire. I'm new to this. So just buy a new AC adapter? It is frayed right at the point it enters the white Apple thing about 3 inches square.

Yep, new adapters are for sale everywhere, Apple probably still sell them.

by

when you say apple should still sell them, are yo meaning this is and older model? also what do yo think the noise on boot could be?

by

Yep, there is a completely different MacBook Pro now, look here.
