How to retrive files from Hard Drive?

I have Ipod classic 7th generation (late 2009) model... My power port broke and i'm trying to retrieve the files from it. I have taken the ipod apart and disconnected the hard drive and connected it to a 50pin/Zif to USB adapter... I have it plugged into my computer. I then click on the drive and it says that I have to format the drive before I can use it..... Is there any way around this?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Ramone Bills not sure what you mean by a 50pin to USB adapter. I use a Zif to USB adapter all the time. Then I use a program like CopyTrans to transfer the files. The trick here is that your computer may not recognize the drive, specially if it was formatted on a Mac and now you are trying a PC or vice versa. Try a different computer and a different OS

Is CopyTrans Free? And do you 'need' that program for this process? Or can you just copy and paste yourself?

Thanks...

Ramone Bills you can't copy and paste because of the iPod file structure. You'll never know what the file was. All you can determine is that it is a MP3. It's kind of weird when you look at it. There are many iPod to computer software titles out there. I just like CopyTrans because I am used to it. Check for something like PodTrans which supposedly is free

Ok... I tried it on Windows Vista and on Windows 10... And it again tells me that I need to format the drive before I use it...... Is there a certain driver that needs to be installed first? Should I have put it in 'disk mode' before I took it apart? I didn't think it would matter...... I purchased it brand new, so it was never formatted before.....
