How to repair the outer area?

A piece of the outer layer is chewed up, but the speaker itself still works.

Hard to tell from the details you give. Perhaps you could post a close-up photo of the damage. Or maybe yo could find a faulty one on eBay that you could take a replacement for the damaged part from.
