Replacement Screen Touch Not Working After Upgrading to iOS11

Wanted to share my experience with a recent iPhone 6s screen repair. So after replacing a screen on an iPhone 6s it worked flawlessly on iOS 10.3.3. Since upgrading to iOS 11 touch no longer works, the screen functions and so do all the buttons but touch no longer works. After multiple attempts to reach out to Apple for an answer on this they blatantly refused to help, even hung up on us, due to it having a 3rd party replacement screen. This seems to be a ridiculous answer to me, thats like an auto manufacturer disabling your car because you put an aftermarket part on it. The function and quality of the part is the same. After multiple attempts to get Apple to help to no avail, out of the blue we were contacted by an Apple software engineer who was very interested in our problem and confirmed that this is an issue in iOS 11 and told us that a fix may be implemented in the next subversion iOS release. In the meantime we had to roll the device back to iOS 10.3.3. This is unacceptable to me that Apple refuses to acknowledge or assist users affected by something that was clearly not present in iOS 10.3.3. ifixit has been extremely helpful during this process and has offered us a replacement screen to see if this fixes the issue. Will be reporting back once we try it. In the meantime thanks ifixit for all the support!

Thanks for the update. Cool that Apple Engineers called you.

I have this problem also. How did you roll back to 10.3.3 without being able to use the touch screen. I cannot connect to iTunes as I cannot enter my password?

Thanks

John.

@johnluly try to use DFU mode to restore your device back to iOS 10.3.3 if the touchscreen not working on iOS 11 with the replaced screen.

Thanks for the update David. This has been a developing issue and there are all kinds of information out there. Unfortunately for end-users, a lot of the best info is on specialized discussion groups. So I have created a blog post that summarizes the most current and relevant information and I have been updating it almost daily.

The bottom line right now is that the problem is with aftermarket screens produced with Hancai or Tianma LCD's using the Aichungjia (a Flex/IC manufacturer) "copy" driver appear to be incompatible with iOS 11. This driver is said to be unable to handle the iOS configuration and therefore shutting down and causing the lack of Touch functionality.

The only real, practical solution right now is to either downgrade to iOS 10 while you still can or install an original/OEM grade replacement screen. I'm confident that the aftermarket screen manufacturers will correct this problem moving forward. In the meantime, contact your local repair shop (or vendor if you repaired it yourself) to see if they can offer you a replacement.

Update 2017/10/31 - Apple has just released iOS 11.1. Check out the details here.

Thanks for the info on the screen manufacturers. iOS 11.01 dropped today so wondering if that may fix the issue. We are going to do some further testing on the display panel. We do have a replacement coming though which may or may not work depending on the chip manufacturer as you stated. Awesome info though! Thanks for your input.

According to this article, iOS 11.0.1 does not fix the Touch issue.

What if i update using a laptop?it still the same?

by

@alexshogo I'm not sure I understand what you mean but the update mechanism, shouldn't matter.

by

Minho you are correct, was a long shot but figured it would be worth a try. iOS 11.01 does not fix the touch screen issue, it was a rather sizable update to just fix an exchange issue at 275mb so figured maybe Apple silently rolled in a fix. Still had no touch response after updating. Should be getting a new screen Friday and will swap out and see if it will work.

Hey so you can still do it, follow the guide outlined here: Not happy with the latest iOS? Here's how to downgrade from iOS 11 to iOS 10 - Digital Trends

Also you will need your password but it will prompt you in iTunes instead. Hope this helps, we have been successful doing this a few times with no issue.

Sounds like one of the connectors on your iPhone logic board might be damaged. As of the recent Apple updates touch is no longer an issue on aftermarket screens. Might want to make sure the little rubber seals around the connectors on the logic board are not being pinched into the connector when attaching the screen flex cables.
