Since I only am going off the information provided and so I do not know if this will be correct. That being said it sounds like the proximity sensor (which is attached to the front facing {selfie} camera) and turns the screen off; preventing buttons to be pressed to find out if this is the issue

-place a call to another phone

-answer the call (or have someone else do it)

- when the receiving phone connects to the call place the bottom of your palm over the top of your iPhone

- Lift your palm and put it back on the top of your phone

Your screen should be should turn off when your palm is on it ( over the the ear speaker), then immediately turn on when you lift your palm. If your screen doesn't turn off (go black) each time your palm is over your ear speaker then your proximity sensor is not working correctly and may be the cause of your issue. If it is then you need to replace the front facing camera (fairly easy & cheap fix), until then a temporary solution is to hit the power button when calls are connected. I hope this was the correct solution to your issue.
