How to check the oil on a 2009 Yamaha warrior 1700

I went to look at a used 2009 Yamaha warrior 1700 and when I looked at the oil in the beginning when it was cold it was barely at the tip of the dipstick but then when I rode it around and let it warm up for about eight minutes it was almost over flowing. Is this normal? Thanks.
