no remote and no manual

I was given the above DVD with nothing but it. I have to to use an RF adapter because there only one connection on the back of the television. After hooking up all the wires to the adapter and player. I get the name of the player on the TV screen. I also have to use a universal remote which won't let me lock in anything on the menu. After inserting a disc, in states that it is loading. After a while I get a message stating bad disc. No picture of the disc. I've tried many discs with the same result. Is there anything I can do to get this player to work properly with what I have to use.

@buick2003 you can download the manual from here.

As for not reading the disk, you may need to try different formats. Use commercial DVD's as well as home burned etc. It is possible that the laser is dirty and cannot read it or that the laser assembly is damaged and no longer reads the disk. Use a commercial lens cleaner and see if that will make a difference. Replacement remotes are available at places like ebay etc.
