Drowned iPod Touch 4 - half-dead

Hello everyone!

Maybe somebody can help?

Drowned my Ipod Touch 4 in hottub. It was in a leather pouch and slipped down to the tub - I almost caught it - it barely dipped into the water - maybe 2 seconds at most.

I shook it immediately, wiped with paper napkins, then put on a heater.

After a few hours I turned it on, and it was alive. Great! Not so fast...

Next morning it accidentally turned off. Booted it again - it worked for a while, then again. If I press Power+Home, it acts weirdly - sometimes turns on after a 30-40-50 sec press, sometimes not at all.

At first I thought its a solely hardware problem. Then I started to think it might be hardware+IOS acting together (anti-tampering protection, some water sensor is signalling). Now I'm thinking maybe the battery is shorting itself - because on the first day it worked 95% fine. Second day - 80%. Third day - 50%. Less work, more shutdowns.

Can you guys recommend anything?

Of course I can throw it away and get a new one from Ebay, but I'm out of my permanent address now and can only do it in 3 weeks. Maybe it's still possible to resurrect this one?

It was only 1.5 seconds in the freshwater, dried quickly. And I've seen posts about more fatal conditions and nevertheless, successful attempts to put it back to life.

Many thanks!

@shofixti 1.5 seconds or a week, does not natter. What matters is where the water gets into your device. You will have to treat it like any other water submersion.

First step would be to stop continuing to try to charge, sync or otherwise use your phone. This potentially can make a bad situation worse.

Next step I would take is to disassemble your iPod. Use these guides to disassemble your iPod. Take a careful and close look at all components and connectors. Truly assess the damage. Look for major corrosion, evaluate the pins in the connectors etc,. Take a look at all connectors as well as cable ends. You will have to remove all the EMI shields. Once you got the gross contamination cleaned, use 90%+ isopropyl alcohol and clean your parts some more. For a proper cleaning, use this guide. It was written for a Apple iPhone 3G but it is still pertinent to your iPod as well. I can not stress the importance of a good cleaning enough, so do it over and over while replacing the alcohol after each cleaning. Do not use compressed air for the cleaning since that can drive liquid as well as corrosion particles into areas that will cause trouble later on. Do not use drinking water, if you need to use water, use sterile water. Also, you do not need to leave it to dry for a day. Isopropyl alcohol in the higher concentration will evaporate quickly and dissipate the water. The importance here is the cleaning. If you can, get it professionally cleaned Do not forget to replace the battery. This is a must and not an option. It will fail if you do not take care of it now. Keep in mind that water damage is the hardest to troubleshoot and to repair. Hope this helps, good luck.
