if this is a phone that is new to you- I would check the imei to make sure it is not listed as lost/stolen

clean the sim card

check sim tray for bent/dirty pins.

the paper under sim tray is a great idea..

Well... Try to put a paper or something thin (~1mm) between the tray and the SIM then put it on the phone.

I can't guarantee you that this will work but why not trying?

Please check if your iPhone have carrier lock or not ? If it is locked with any carrier, that sim only works in your iPhone . If you want to use it with other networks, you need to unlock it from the locked network . For that, you can get unlocking servcie from your service provider or from any of the online vendors like Prounlocking.com to unlock it . Once, you have removed network restriction from your iPhone, you can use it with any other GSM carriers internationally .After that, it won't accept/not recognize any sim card, it may be hardware problem .
