Why is my computer struggling to turn on?

Hi,

So a couple of weeks ago, my laptop tried to run an update as I was shutting it down, I needed to bring my laptop with me so I shut it. When I tried using it again, it would turn on, but the screen was blank. I took the advice I saw online, I unplugged it, took out the battery, held the power button to drain it, plugged it back in without the battery, and it started up again. It worked fine for a few weeks, but now is doing that more consistently. Yesterday, I tried several times the method I described above to fix it and it wouldn't work. Eventually, I got it started again, and rebooted it to see if that would help. Today I tried to turn it on and it wouldn't the first time. So I held down the power button the second time and it worked. I'm not sure if this is an indication that my laptop is on it's last legs or if I need to try something other than rebooting it. Any help in identifying the problem or possible solution would be great. Thank you.
