Swapping Samsung for Toshiba?

Hi, I have a dead Samsung HS081HA drive in my iPod Classic 5th Gen. It is 5mm thick. Can I replace it with a Toshiba MK8010GAH drive that is 8mm thick? I believe that both were used, and the thinner drive just had foam padding on each side.

Yes, that's correct. You can also consider installing a flash drive instead of a physical drive. All of the 1.8" drives are old, used drives at this point so putting in a Flash upgrade is much better.

I did one for a customer and they were extremely pleased.
