Battery stats seem off

I've just purchased a previously owned Macbook and the battery life is, as to be expected, appalling.

I've run Coconut and it claims my battery is good having only had 2 cycles and being installed last year.

I'm concerned that the battery may be reporting incorrectly or has been replaced and something wasn't reset.

I'm new to Mac's, so aren't sure how these things work.

So, I double checked the battery that's been fitted and it's only a 4000mAh one. I've ordered a 5800mAh one, so should get better battery life.

Now the only question left is what would you fit a smaller battery?

Coconut battery is a very reliable utility that reads all the infos stored in the logics of the battery. I've never heard of battery logics being hacked to show infos better than reality and I'm pretty confident the infos shown by the apple system profiler and coconut are reliable. Keep an eye for a few days on your statistics but I'd say be happy, you got a new battery in your Mac, enjoy it.

I would be happy, but it seems the battery is running down really quickly.

I've turned off as much as I dare (no Bluetooth, brightness turned down, Time Machine and Spotlight turned off, but it seems like the battery is running down very quickly especially as most reports are around four to five hours battery life........

4/5 hours on a core2duo of 2009 seems to me a bit optimistic, unless it's a top quality battery recently manufactured. In any case, you need at least a couple of full cycles (charge/discharge) before the stats will be meaninful, especially if battery is new and has been sitting unused for some time.

I'll try a couple of charge/discharge cycles and see if that makes any difference. Is an SMC reset worth a shot?

by

No harm in trying, but won't probably make any difference, I don't see a system malfunction there :)

Ok, that's cool. Many thanks!
