Complete upgrade of laptop?

I have a Macbook Pro 13" (mid 2009) and am trying to decide on whether it would be worth it to completely upgrade it or simply buy a new laptop. If I upgraded it, I would want to upgrade the RAM as well as do whatever I need to do to update to the latest OS. There are several things I will need to replace, just trying to figure out exactly what I need to do (as well as my options) and what order to do it. I am able to follow a repair guide pretty well, just not very familiar with the specs and what I need to improve my computer so it can perform well at the level I need.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

OK to start with your system is only able to support 8 GB of RAM so if you've already have that much you can't add any more.

You could upgrade the HD to a SSHD or even a SSD. But your systems SATA port is only SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) so it's not the fastest, and you will need to make sure the drive you do get is able to run with the older SATA speed.

Sadly, Apple dropped support for the Core 2 Duo based systems with Sierra. The highest you can go to with this system is El Capitan (OS-X 10.11.x). While may apps still run under El Capitan, overtime the newer apps that leverage Sierra and High Sierra API's won't

So what to do??

If you are happy with what you are currently using for apps and the systems speed still meets your expectation they stay with your system.

If you need more CPU power and deeper RAM as well as support the newest MacOS to do what you want to then you'll need to look at a newer system that supports the newer i series CPU's. You don't need to jump to the very newest systems! Just get to an i5 or i7 based system (used).
