So basically i have had my phone for about 6 months and recently changed my password. I have since forgotten it. I have my thumb print that still works but i cant restart my phone as that will require a pin. I know i could factory reset it but i dont want to loose any data from my phone.

Go to the Google Device Manager

You should be able to change your lock screen password.

Consider backing up the phone with Samsung smart switch via computer then factory reset it and restore the backup made from Samsung smart switch.
