Cannot charge over USB or Wall

While charging in my car charger (I just purchased a Griffin) the cigarette adapter is pretty loose, the entire phone went dead. When I rebooted the backlight would not work, I tried brightness auto/off settings with no result, the screen would work when connected to usb. I restored it and the issue became a flickering backlight. As I continued to troubleshoot the battery was being drained but not charged.

No matter where I plugged it it refused to charge. It is now dead and will not respond to anything hard reset or otherwise. There has never been any water dammage.

Any ideas?

William Eachus, just wondering if this was still a problem or if you got it fixed?

Replaced dock connector and nothing. Replaced battery, worked until that battery died. Was able to sink though so just the charging doesn't work. Probably a connector on the board.

William Eachus, Since you just replaced the dock connector, make sure you triple check your work. Check the fuses on your board and make sure that they are working. Make sure you have tried to charge it on different USB ports as well as an AC charger, check the cable too. If it is still not working after you ruled out averything else then it is definitely something on your charge cicuit since it worked for a while with the new battery. Just make sure that the battery is not one of a bad batch. Here is a picture of the fuse in question. iPhone 3G wont turn on..!..!.! hope this helps, if not, let us know.
