Tape plays very quiet but test function works normaly

Hello, I am having problems with my vintage tape deck, I got the thing running with new belts but the audiotapes are extremely quiet, full volume on the deck and its just about audible that something is playing. The strange thing is that the test function of the deck works perfectly and nearly blew my ears of when I switched it on. So there is no problem with the main mosfets, and in general dead mosfets wouldn't result in quiet playback. Anyone got a clew? I'm a noob when it comes to tape equipment has it something to do with the play head?

Thanks a lot didn't find this post while searching myself, was just going through the service manual, but this probably will save me a lot of time :)

Markus, thanks for replying back, good luck with your deck.

Just tested the headphone output of the deck but other than in the first post it does the same as the normal output, tape plays very quiet and test tone works fine. So it might not be a problem with the mute circuit.

Fixed it! It was the mute of the Tape/Input switch, the Switch was stuck on the the Input position internally, so it worked after fixing the Switch. Amazing the thing still works without any electrical faults after 40 years! :)
