I had this problem and my mechanic found that a bolt at the top of the timing chain cover had backed itself about three quarters out. He tightened the bolt, no more leak. Avoided a major cost.

mariocaines52 , You did not state your vehicle model, year, engine. So I will post generic answer. It could be a camshaft seal valve cover seal, crank shaft seal, gasket, etc.. If you can not detect the exact area of the leak, then engine will have to be wiped down(cleaned) to find the leak and then properly repaired. It would be wise to have repaired as this may get onto the timing belt causing it to slip, causing catastrophic failure possibly. If you are not into tackling repair your self have a good local auto shop have a look, diagnose and estimate repair. Good luck. I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.

UPDATE 04/13/2017 2003 Ford Ranger 2.3

Now that I know what the vehicle is, it is probably the valve cover gasket faulty letting oil leak down onto the front of timing chain cover. You can try snugging/tightening up the cover bolts to see if that helps/stops the oil leak as a first step. The changing of the valve cover gasket looks to be a fairly big job for the inexperienced. I did a search and posted links that I thought would help you. I could not find any free manuals, perhaps your local library may have one or you could purchase one. Good luck with your repair.
