How to replace or repair broken motorized trunk retractor

Is it even possible to get this trunk to close automatically with a new or repaired motorized retractor?

@boatbuildertom , Tom, Look for a broken wire for retractor at the trunk hinge drivers side, there is a plug there also may be loose/corroded plug or a couple broken wires.

Other causes could be fuse/relay, paddle/switch, actuator, pull down assy./motor faulty. It would also be a good idea to lube up the latch/lock assy. really well and note that the latch is indeed in the open position. Testing procedure can be found in the 1st link. 2nd and 3rd link are informative forums that also deal with same issue and have repair advice. Good luck.
