Noise from rear end

A mechanic says it is the rear end going out, how do I repair it?

John Quigley , Link's #1 and #2 below UNITIZED TRANSAXLE tear down/parts list, section 11G pg. 11-2 to 11-7. The rear end will have to be removed/disassembled and all bearings/gears/shafts/seals/etc. checked for wear and worn parts replaced(link #3 is all I could find for a free service/repair manual) you can also try a search. You could also do a search for a good replacement rear end if not wanting to repair old unit. Good luck. I hope this helped you out, if so let me know by pressing the helpful button.
