Have to press the charging plug to charge
I have to keep the charging plug pressed into the port or at an angle to keep the charge going. The moment I release the plug, the charging stops.

I would think that you have most likely that the connector on the logic board has failed. Of course make sure that your USB cable is working properly. You might need to try a new one first. If that still does not resolve you can
A:) replace the logic board available here http://www.ifixit.com/iPod-Parts/iPod-To... or
B:) replace the connector on the logic board. every now and then they do become available on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-Female-Connector... or are for sale at most popular online stores that specialize in iPod parts, i.e.Demigods.com or milliamp.com and numerous others.
