Do you see any unknown devices under device and printers?

by

From your start menu type: "Disk management"

Does your HDD appear here?

by

no just my drives are there. like C D etc etc

by

When you connect the drive what sounds does the drive itself make?

Does it make a whirring noise like the disk is spinning?

Does it make no noise at all?

Or does it make a consistent ticking noise? This indicates the drive may have failed.

@betabore, could you please check under devices and printers and see if there are any unkown devices?

Is this a powered unit or is it powered through the usb port itself? Have you tried doing a safe eject and then plugging it back in . When you plug in the drive and it spins up does the drive spin continuously or does it eventually stop? Have you tried left clicking on the drive and seeing whats there for properties and also have you tried troubleshooting it also with left click

@betabore If you get no results with this and the data is worth more to you than the warranty you may want to get something like this

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/USB-2-0-SATA-7-22...

and take the hard drive out of the case to see if its the case thats causing the problem . all an external drive is is a internal drive in a case so by removing it from the case then you can connect with a SATA to USB adaptor

@jimfixer This is what i have to do i think yea. thanks for your time

most likely the hard drive has gone bad I have had 2 Western Digitals do that one in few days got replaced from WD and that one lasted about a year. if out of warranty can just replace the drive (standard laptop or Desktop drive) the plastic case just snaps apart finding the places to insert small screwdriver can be the trick.
