Laptop not booting. Chime sounds broken

Hi,

My macbook pro non-retina 2012 gets stuck at the apple logo progress bar.

On boot, there is the chime but it doesn't sound smooth. Has a vibration to the chime sound.

For a few weeks, I had noticed screen flickering but the laptop used to boot. Now it just hangs at the progress bar and screen flickers on and off with colors.

Some technicians diagnosed it as logic board failure. My questions are:

1) How can I decisively say its logic board failure? The technicians say they are not sure. Since diagnostics for logic board is not completing, they assume its the logic board.

2) Is it advisable to replace logic board or should I simply get a new laptop?

Thanks for the help.

If it flickers with colors it's most likely a graphics card problem which is soldered to the logic board.

The progress bar hanging could be the hard drive also to rule this out you have to boot from another known good hard drive.

The flickering and changing colors could be a bad screen or bad connection to the screen.

For the second question:

It all depends on your budget

A new MacBook Pro starts at 1 499$ a repair for yours could start at 100$ up to 350$ or little more.

Thanks for the reply.

Have tried different hard disks and it's the same issue. So I guess its not the disk.

Is there a way I can use an external monitor during boot?

It will do the same thing even on a external monitor.

Maybe would start in safe mode but this doesn't work every time.

Even safe mode doesn't work. Same flickering. Does it mean its the logic board?
