Why is the red light still on and saying the tablet is still charging

My daughters table died, so we put it on the charger and let it charge. When it was fully charged we took the charger off and the red light stayed on. We turned the tablet on and it says charging but it isn't plugged in. Now it's getting hot where the charger should be plugged in.
