How do I setup WD MY BOOK 4TB external HD as a shared HD

MacBook Pro 13" Mid 2012 i5 500 GB

I have an external WD MyBook 4TB HD. Is there any way to set that up on my MacBook so its connected to the internet and everyone in my family can log into it to upload download and view pictures? We live in different parts of the country.

Chosen Solution

Sure,

1) Go To Settings

2) go To Sharing

3) enable file sharing

4) add your WD hard drive and assign users.

Note you need a public facing IP address, or you need to map your router to point to your Mac.

You may find your internet connections speed won't be fast enough. Remember most of us have asymmetric connections. So the upstream flow is slow and the downstream flow is fast. So your family might find access to your stuff quite slow as your internet connection will be the choke point.

Think about the costs of upgrading your link Vs the cost of using a shared iCloud resource. Also remember you won't be able to disconnect your system or shut it down.

If your family uses Windows 10, OneDrive for Microsoft Outlook.com maybe a better solution, as it integrates seamlessly as a regular folder.

The cloud service is using a providers system to host your stuff.

As you have a Mac I was pointing you to Apples iCloud service, That way your stuff can then be posted to the site you create to allow you and your family access (each would have a unique user ID & password you set up to gain access to your stuff. There are about a dozen services that are like Apple's.
