No sound from iMac except for the start up chime

I have seen many similar problems with this iMac. Just wondering if anyone else has my exact problem and may have a solution.

My iMac has no sound at all (except startup chimes) and no way of changing the settings in system pref's as it shows no alternatives to select other than "Digital out".

The previous owner has removed the headphone socket and cable leaving an empty socket on the motherboard. Does this need to be replaced to enable the internal speakers to work?

The obvious solution around "no internal sound" is just to airplay to a wifi speaker, but I would like to have my internal speakers up and running. Not worried about being able to connect anything from the headphone socket.

Thanks in advance of any help.

Chosen Solution

Yes, the jack socket needs to be put back as in addition to offering an output (analog & digital) if houses two switches one to select system or external but also analog vs digital output.

Now the hard part ;-{

Apple does not offer the part! But you can still get one used. Here's one source: iMac 27" Headphone Socket and Cable (12/13)

The other alternative it to buy a USB DAC unit to then plug in your headphones or external speakers.

If he had left you the cable end you might have fixed it or at least been able to figure out how to short the contact points to jumper the switch to enable the internal speaker.

Frankly, I would get the part as the value of the system will be higher with a working speaker/external port.
