My desktop is on but I have no image on the monitor.

No image on the monitor. The monitor works (I have tested it). The computer works because I hear it running smoothly but no images come to the screen. I have switched connecting cables and nothing. Could thid be the video card gone bad?

before replacing the video card try this . shut down the computer then unplug it from the wall so there is no power to the machine at all . Now hold down the power button for 60 seconds . then release the power button and plug the computer back in . Now try to reboot. when it boots listen for post beeps . how many and in what order are they? If you can give me the exact model of the computer we can tell whats wrong by the beeps

Hi,

According to the specifications for a Gateway SX-2370 (as posted at the top of this page next to your question) the desktop has an integrated video adapter. (This means that it is hard mounted onto the motherboard and usually cannot be replaced easily).

It also has both HDMI and vga video outputs. Have you tried both to see if they are both faulty or if it is only one type of video output that is faulty? (I also assume that you tested the monitor using the same input signal type and port i.e. HDMI or vga, as what you were connected to from the desktop).

If as @jimfixer suggests that you checked for "beeps" on start up and there are none it possibly means that the graphics adapter whilst it is is recognized by the system doesn't have an output.

If this is the case you would have to change the motherboard as again, according to the specifications, there aren't any PCI, PCIe or AGP slots available to insert a new graphics adapter.

What is the model number of the computer?

With gateway desktops, 1 beep error code on POST (Power On Self Test) means a memory (RAM) problem.

During the POST procedure which is after the PC is turned on but before it boots into the Operating System the RAM is checked before the video adapter is checked and if there is a problem the startup is stopped and a beep error code is produced. There will be no video output.

Disconnect the power from the computer and remove / reinsert all of the RAM modules.

Reconnect the power and turn on the PC and check.

if still no good, if there are 2 or more RAM modules, disconnect the power and remove all RAM modules except one, reconnect the power, turn on and check.

If still no good do as above but with a different RAM module. You may have a faulty RAM module and you have to find out which one it is. Once it starts you will know.

If no good when all RAM modules tried, do the same but in the next RAM slot on the motherboard in case it is a faulty slot and not a faulty module.

@jayeff

The computer is an SX2370. My online research said that one beep was a motherboard or sound error... crap.

It has 3 ram modules, so your solution makes total sense. Now i just need the time to test it out! :-) after posting this, i bought a $25 motherboard replacement; but I think i'll test the RAM solution first. if that is the issue, it'll be faster.

I'll let you know how it goes.
