Hi,

What is the make and model number of your PC and your monitor?

What connection were you using between your PC and monitor, vga, DVI, HDMI?

What connection are you using between your laptop and monitor, vga, DVI, HDMI?

Are you using the same cable between your laptop and monitor as you had between your PC and monitor?

@aut does your computer make any Beep sounds when you turn it on?

This is a common issue and I have fixed a lot of these. First off you said you tried the monitor on another comouter, so I am assuming you used the same cable.

When you used to start the computer, did it beep or anything when it was starting up? If it did, is it doing it now? A lot of times your computer isnt making it past POST which is why you are getting the black screen. So you can try a couple of things.

You need to unplug the power cord on the tower. Then you can take out the CMOS battery located on the motherboard. Take it out for about 5 minutes. While it is out hold down the power button for one minute. After the 5 minututes is up, insert the battery again. This will reset the CMOS.

If that doesn't work then take a look at the motherboard. Look at the capacitors and see if they are bad. You can visually tell if a capacitor is bad if it is bulging from the top or has a liquid type stuff leaking from it. Good capacitors are flat on top. I have found a lot of desktops do this because of a bad capacitors.

If all capacitors look good, then you should go through and take each component out one by one until you find the issue. You can also try to have only the main cords plugged in like the monitor and power cord and see if that resolves it. So take out 1 stick of RAM and turn the computer on and see if that fixes it, and if it doesnt take the other out. Keep doing this until you have taken all components out and tested it.

I never asked, but does your monitor display NO SIGNAL or anything like that? Is the monitor plugged directly into the motherboard or into a card? You may have a bad motherboard. Hopefully this gives you some insight. There are many causes to this issue. Let us know your progress and if you have any questions!

Sorry, must have been a misunderstanding. You want to do the CMOS battery first. After you do everything with the CMOS battery make sure you put it back in. And THEN do the other steps I explained above, like taking one component out at a time. Did you also take the hard drive out and see if that helps?

I have a hard time believing it is in the processor base. Have you also tried connecting to an external monitor?
