Lock suddenly appears on external hard drive

I was preparing to do a back up. Suddenly, a small lock appeared on my second volume on my 13" MacBook Pro (Sept. 2012) and then locks appeared on all three volumes of my external backup drive (4T G-Drive).

I have been trying to fix this since Friday, 25 Nov. 2016. I have tried using another computer with a different OS to no avail.

HELP!

Lets backup here a bit.

  • Do you have multiple user accounts or did you alter the systems drive in any way?
  • Have you tried booting up in diagnostic mode? Review this: Startup key combinations for Mac did it find any problems?

Do you have access to a second Mac? If you do can you inter-connect them in Target Mode so you can run Disk Utility from the other system to check your systems drive? If you don't have access to second Mac are you able to boot up under an external drive? You may need to create a bootable drive I would recommend getting a 16 GB USB thumb drive and while you can create a bootable drive. You may want to save anything important that is not currently backed up as your drive maybe failing.
