No sound from ear piece, replaced ear piece speaker already

I replaced the battery and ear piece speaker for my wife's iPhone 5 but the ear piece speaker still didn't work. I tried putting headphones in the jack and fiddling with that, and eventually it started working again (this was after the battery/ear piece replacement, and it still didn't work).

I am not sure if it was related to putting ear buds in the headphone jack or not.

Is there anything else I can do to fix this for good, or not an easy fix?

Right now she has to use speaker phone again.

I have tried doing an erase on the phone, to see if it was software but that did not fix it. I do a restore from backup to bring it back to where it was.

When earbuds are inserted in to the headphone jack, they disconnect the circuitry to the earpiece speaker. In essence, it is one or the other.

The headphone jack can suffer from all kinds of physical and environmental damage as it is literally open to the world. You could inspect the inside of the headphone port with a jeweler's loupe. You should see 3 pins on one side and one pin on the other (although that may vary). If one of those pins is deeper inside its hole than the others, that could be a pin that always thinks there's a earbud, hence cutting our the earpiece.

If you have easy access to parts, you could try replacing the headphone port, that may solve your problem.
