How do I get viruses off my laptop?

My son watched adult entertainment on my Dell laptop and it wont do anything, its telling me to call an 800 number, I did and they said to take laptop to somewhere like Best Buy and it will be $200 to fix it. Sounds kinda pricey, can I fix it myself?

Depending on the virus there are a few things possible short of a full system formatting . You can try pulling the hard drive and placing it in a enclosure and then with another computer do a virus scan to remove it . You can also get a bootable jump drive made with something like Linux Ubuntu and do a virus scan from there and remove it that way . You can maybe do a system rollback to a restore point if you had created one at all then do a virus scan to remove burried files that could come back at some point . But if you truely want to rid yourself of the problem do a clean install of the OS . save your data and reformat . You can find tutorials on you tube to do any of the above . Hope this helps

Hi, To add to @jimfixer answer. A few A/V (Anti Virus) programs offer what is known as a 'recovery' disc. Essentially what this is is a bootable USB drive with an A/V program on it which will boot the pc without Windows having to be launched. It will scan through all the files on the HDD to find and eliminate all the viruses that it knows about.

Unfortunately you have to have the A/V already installed somewhere, like on another pc so that you can create the USB recovery drive from it to use in the infected pc.

One good example is Avast A/V Free. This is a free version of Avast. Find it online , download it onto a pc (one that hasn't already got an A/V installed (which is hard as most should have) install the program and once installed use the program features to create the 'recovery' drive. Recovery is a misnomer as it is actually a bootable virus scanner/removal program. I suppose you could say that it recovers your pc from a virus attack.
