Why is my computer not reading discs anymore?

My computer has not been reading discs recently. Also, sometimes when I take a disc out it seems to be scratched. Why is this happening and how do I fix it?

First, check to make sure there is no debris in the CD tray, as that could be the cause of your scratched discs. Open the CD drive and give it a wipe down with a microfiber cloth to make sure there are no specks of dirt, crumbs, or anything else that could be on there but hard to see.

If your discs stop getting scratched, but still do not read, the disc drive in your laptop might have stopped working properly due to normal wear and tear. There are often no ways to fix the issue as there is usually physical irreparable damage to the CD reader itself. Replacing the whole disc drive is probably the only choice.
