It worked perfect before hurricane Matthew.

I did the factory reset and it still loads forever. At least I know it is a hardware problem and I plan to trash it unless you have a better idea. I am sure the hurricane wrecked it because it worked fine before the hurricane but not after. Our power was going dim and bright and on and off. Strangely enough my kindle has the same problem, it is stuck on fire in red letters.

At least we gave it our best shot. Good luck.

Chosen Solution

Go to the Home button > WiFi and network setup > View configuration

Check to see if it is connected to your home network. for example:

Mode Auto/DHCP

ESSID [your network name]

MAC address [letters and numbers]

IP address 192.168.0.xxx

Network device rt3870 (mine)

If these are not correct then you may not be connected to your WiFi network correctly. This radio requires an internet connection to work. Sometimes a particular station will not work so try a different station.

I have had an issue with some locations not working well such as putting the radio within 3 feet of the router.

You can also try the Master Power reset and the Reset to Factory defaults under the settings menu.

Nothing happens when I press the home button.

Hi Gene,

You can try this reset procedure from the Grace Digital website. If that doesn't work then you will have to contact their tech support or return the radio (if it is new).

this one was the answer proving it is a hardware problem and ready for the trash bin and now I can relax with the knowledge there is nothing more I can do for this dead radio.

I had the same problem with our radio. To solve it, I took it apart, and just re-seated all of the connectors from the various components to the main PCB. I also pulled off the daughter card (top-most board on the stack) and re-seated it as well. When I turned it back on, it needed to be re-configured, but successfully connected and started working again.

To take apart the radio:

  • Facing the back of the radio, remove the two Phillips screws on the left (volume knob) side.
  • Use a thin metal spudger or screwdriver to pry off the cloth covered speaker grill. It's held in with four snaps, and pops off pretty easily.
  • In the plastic area surrounding the speaker, you'll find four deep-set Phillips screws. Remove them.
  • Using a thin screwdriver or heavy-duty metal spudger, pry the plastic speaker mount away from the outer case shell. There's some sticky glue holding it in place, but it gives away pretty easily.
  • As you pry the speaker side up, you'll see the control board has a number of cables attached to it. You'll need to unplug these from the control board (the cables are permanently attached on the other end.

What's inside is basically a small Linux PC with a UI for streaming radio stations. The WiFi is a dongle plugged into a USB jack inside; I managed to improve the reception on ours by plugging in a WiFi dongle with the same WiFi chip (RT3870) but a better antenna.

Obviously, this all voids the warranty, but I think these radios have been out of production for a few years anyway, so you probably don't have much to lose.

Nice to have instructions to open the radio. You can check the signal strength under settings > WiFi and Network setup > scroll to the bottom. The Mondo is still on the Grace Digital website as a product so I think it is still in production. It is modern looking and works pretty well so I don't think they will stop. Also I get times when station are buffering a lot or won't start. I think that is the internet and usually restarting the modem fixes it unless the problem is not yet fixed by the cable company. I have a 100mps connection.

by

When I checked the signal strength the % rotates from 60 to 80 to 100 and back again continuously. Any ideas on the problem?

by

I have also found that the WiFi router will affect the radio performance. I chaneged my router from a Tenda AC1750 to a Motorola MR2600 and the radios no longer drop out.

The most excellent instructions! Opened it, disconnected and reconnected cables and it works beautifully! Thought I would give your directions one last try before I threw it out. You made this a excellent eBay purchase!
