My MBP 13" non-retina Camera lights up but does not work

I have a mid 2012 macbook pro 13" non-retina A1278. I purchased it with a broken isight cable and replaced it, now the camera light comes on, but it will not display images or take pictures at all. I have the same problem across all apps and user profiles. Things Ive tried:

resetting SMC

fresh install of OS X

installed older version of OS X.

Is my cable the issue or the camera itself? thanks

Options

Sounds like the camera unit its self is damaged. Do you have access to a complete replacement display assembly? I would give that a try to isolate out things and maybe you'll just replace the complete assembly here.
