Want does this "chip do?

I have a MacBook pro 15* Unibody Early 2011. I have had numerous graphics problems with it, I believe the solution to it is this:

http://www.apple.com/uk/support/macbookp...

I handed my macbook to Humac.dk, a 3-part Preimun retailer. Humac found a VST failure, which fits very well with the problem stated above.

At the same time as they found the VST failure they also found that a chip on the logic board was missing its shield and had some corrosion on it, SEE PICTURE the chip is in the lower left corner next to the fan.

Because of this chip the garanti won't cover the repair.

What does this chip do, and is it the cause of the VST failure and graphics problems that I have experienced?

Thanks for your help.

Your image shows the driver chip (Delta chip) had a catastrophic failure!

Here is a better view of the logic board so you can see the chip outlined in light blue in the top left:

In the schematics it is marked U9701 (LP8545SQX) TI's version of the chip is: High-Efficiency LED Backlight Driver for Notebooks

Can you give us some background here on what happened. Does an external display work correctly Vs your internal display?
