Keyboard suddenly stopped working.

The keyboard on my Macbook stopped working out of nowhere.

A couple of years ago I spilled coffee on the left side of my Macbook's keyboard. I cleaned it up, let it dry, it wasn't working.. I switched my Macbook off and I haven't touched it for half a year. After that, I wanted to check if it was still dead, but to my surprise everything worked again except the left cmd key. I removed the keys to clean up the sticky mess.

Everything seemed to be working all right for years.. until a week or so ago. My laptop was next to me while I was working (I use it for some research and reference images etc..) open and switched on, I searched for a reference I needed, then continued my work, not touching my laptop. When I needed another reference image I was kind of typing nonsense and some keys were messed up and then it just stopped working.

My trackpad always gives a right-click while I am trying to left-click.

I opened keyboard viewer and it showed two keys as being pressed in "^" and "`" . When I switched languages, it disappeared but the issue was still there..

I couldn't drag open windows around. When I plug an external mouse and keyboard everything seems to be working fine. I have no idea what is going on and I think it's a software problem.

I already tried to wiping my system and reinstalling a fresh one, keyboard still doesn't work... I'm really desperate here. What could this be?

I am adding a video of the strange behaviour of my keyboard so maybe someone can help me out?

I noticed yesterday, while I was translating some things on my imac (usb keyboard), while switching the languages with cmd + spacebar (my keyboard viewer was on the screen as well) that the exact same keys appeared to be pressed in as on my Macbook. It went away when I switched to another language and then back again. I'm really puzzled.

And here's the video:

If someone needs to go into detail about the specs:

Macbook 13" mid 2010

Another thing.. after I installed a fresh OS X 10.6.3 I wanted to do an update to a newer version, did the update, said to restart so I did... but then it got stuck on the spacey background forever. I had to force shut down. I don't know if this is linked to the keyboard issue or not but I thought I should mention it too.

Hope someone will help me out here.

Thanks in advance for reading this wall of text.

Edit:

This is what just happened on my imac after switching languages

Update (09/05/2016)

I found a workaround after all.

At some point I figured out it was my left CTRL key that was stuck.. I installed KeyRemap4MacBook and disabled my left CTRL key. I don't see this as a solution because my keyboard is still sometimes buggy, when I press shift + à 0 key it doesn't show up as 0 but as à.

Another problem is that I can't set up a "good" password for my user because the app KeyRemap4MacBook doesn't startup unless you are already logged in. This is why I enabled "automatic log on".

I'm still looking for a solution how to fix my (broken?) CTRL key if it's fixable.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?
