iPhone 4 randomly shut downs

I have got an iPhone 4 (A1332) iOS 7.1.2 which I bought knowing there is a possible battery issue where the phone would randomly die even though there is battery life. However since receiving the phone I have noticed (with me) this issue only arises with my Apple earpods my non-Apple headphones doesn't cause this issue. I have done a restore and I have a new battery with tools at hand but before replacing the battery I wanted to know if just replacing the battery will work or if there could be another problem?

I don't see how a faulty earphone jack would cause the phone to immediately shut off unless it was water damaged or something was shorting the earphone jack.

Since you already have a new battery at hand it's worth a try replacing the battery and testing it to see if it the issue still occurs. You will only have to plug the new battery in when testing so in case that doesn't solve your issue you can put the new battery back in its packaging.

I swapped the battery over this morning and the phone still died whilst using Apple earpods. However I did also notice today during a phone call using the Apple earpods there was a lot of crackle yet using a third party headset the sound was crystal clear. I then tried the Apple earpods in my Galaxy Note 3 and there was still the crackle. So could faulty earpods cause random shut downs?

Just to add the crackle ONLY occurs when making a phone call or recording voice memos and can be heard by the other caller on their end

I think it's safe to say those apple earpods have gone bad, the in-line microphone on it is probably bad.

The question is if the mic is faulty (and it does look like that is 1 issue) could it cause the phone to stop responding after pressing 1 of the buttons?

I say that because earlier today when I tried to turn the volume down the phone suddenly died which had also happened on the previous battery but when skipping a music track.

I have also just did some testing with the earpods attached to my Galaxy Note 3 and trying out a 3rd party earphones and a Madcatz FREQ M headset and the only way I can explain the 'noise' is more like an insect crawling over the mic. I did also confirm the issue by testing the earpods on the iPhone and the other headsets on the Galaxy
