Is my hard drive failing?

I suspect my hard drive is showing signs of dying. I have noticed that some files that I download are 'corrupt' and they wont open. Also, at times my iMac suddenly freezes for no reason with the rolling coloured ball and the only way to get out of it is by switching the iMac off. I have tried see if there's an issue by running First Aid in Disk Utility and what ends up happening is everything freezes up and I have to switch the iMac off from the back.

Can anyone tell me how I can check the health status of my hard drive and see if it needs replacing?

Answer this question I have this problem too

You'll need to boot up your system on an external bootable disk so you can run Disk Utility. This could be the original installer disk that came with your system, a FireWire drive or even a USB thumb drive you've prepped.

You should make a back up of anything important before running Disk Utilities First Aid function. You may need to wipe the disk and re-install the OS if you have some bad sectors. That may buy you some time.

As to what to put in for a replacement drive you do need to be careful here as your system has a SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) interface so the drive you get needs to run at this I/O speed. I would recommend going with a hybrid drive like a Seagate Desktop SSHD to get some zip.
