Use your original system installation disk to boot from (insert disk and hold down "C" key on start up.

Go to the second page and the pull down menu will appear.

Go to Utilities > Disk Utility . Format the drive GUID and Apple extended.

Now you can install a system.

I don't but have OS X original install DVD's from my iMac (similar vintage) and a DVD drive on G5. will that work?

What is the part number on the disk? It might work, the grey disks were machine series specific, but you can give it a try. It will tell you if it won't work. Also a Retail version of OS X 10,5 will work. If you have another Mac with a similar OS X , you can set it up in Target mode with a firewire cable to access the drive.

After it is formatted you can then even clone the drive using SuperDuper: http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/S...

Replacing the drive is just the first part... You still need to install the OS onto the drive. Do you have the original OS install CD/DVD or a bootable drive to recover from?
