iPhone Screen not working?

i have a first gen iphone and it has stopped showing a screen at first it was just a white screen that was lit and i could press keys on the touch pad and awnser calls and now i can do nothing i can hear the rining and reciving of messages but am unable to see not just a normal black screen. i went to a apple store and they said that they could only reboot it and i would be unalbe to get my contacts off it and that would definetly be a last resort if you could help that would be muchly appriciated

If it your iPhone still comes up as a device in iTunes you can back up your contacts there. When you plug it in click on it, then click the info tab, from there you should see an area called contacts. There will be a drop down list of options; MS Exchange, Gmail and there may be few others. Sync your contacts through one of those and you can then do a full restore. But remember to double check that your contacts have been backed up.

Once you have restored your iPhone sync your contacts from the service you used back to your iPhone.
