How can I test a Dell LCD Screen?

I need to test the LCD in my dell M6300. It's solid black, no flickers, nothing. I have replaced the motherboard (this fix lasted 6 weeks), the GPU, the CPU, and the motherboard a 2nd time. These last attempts did nothing. When I power ON, I hear the optical drive as it boots up and I am able to feel the HD as it starts spinning, but the LCD remains pitch black.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Do you have any images when you connect an external monitor?

by

Unfortunately, I no longer have an external monitor. That is probably the best approach in this modern world of R&R computer repairs.

I have Inspiron 13 5378, laptop turns on, no display, I did start BIST test, I do get colors on the screen, but then back to just black screen and computer still on,also tried turning laptop on while holding the FN key, but nothing, just a black screen. So what does this mean if I do get colors on BIST text? Thanks in advanced.

- I also have HDMI port only, I tried connecting external monitor, but nothing, I did try hitting the FN + F8 (which is the extend to external monitor option key)

I have exactly the same issue (different model though - Dell Studio 1558). Any success or update? I can run the BIST test and get colours but otherwise totally blank screen and no success with an additional monitor (whether HDMI or VGA)

jpviewer1 start off by checking to see if this works for your model:

"Laptop LCD Built-In Self Test

To run the Built-In Self-Test perform the following:

Method 1

Turn the computer off.

Press and hold the D key while pressing the power button. This will start the Laptop LCD BIST.

The screen will display multiple flashing colors. Look for lines, distortion, or any other video issues you have observed.

The laptop will restart when the test is finished.

Method 2

Turn the computer off.

Press and hold the Fn key and power on your laptop while holding down the Fn key. This will start the Dell Pre-Boot System Assessment.

Your computer will now run a series of tests.

When your computer displays a series of horizontal and vertical color bars, it will prompt you with a pop-up message "Do you see the color bars? Yes / No

Press the N key to enter the Laptop LCD BIST. Note: If you do not respond for 30 seconds, the diagnostics will automatically assume your response as a 'No' and proceed to the Laptop LCD Built-In Self Test.

The screen will display multiple flashing colors. Look for lines, distortion, or any other video issues you have observed.

The laptop will restart when the test is finished."

With all the items you already replaced, I would go and check the inverter. your M6300 uses a CCFL backlight so this could be caused by a bad inverter. Take a flashlight and angle it against the LCD see if you can make out some images. If so, replace the inverter.

Thank You, oldturkey03 - the D button powered up the LCD instantly & then displayed R-G-B then white screens. I forgot to mention that I replaced both fans after 1 went bad. So the LCD is OK.

Sounds like a bad GPU. Tried an external monitor?

Thank You again oldturkey03, So after trying everything but the obvious, and ignoring the fact that I have had more problems with GPU's than everything else - Your last comment spurred me to break out my spare graphics card (yes I have a spare) & I'm up & running again!!! THANK YOU AGAIN -oldturkey03!!!
