Upgrading Processor to quad core

I got this old macbook pro 15" 2.53ghz intel core 2 duo. and I am looking to make some upgrades to it either the processor or the video card something that would help the machine run faster. I have already upgraded the ram to the max 8gb and I'm looking into an SSD but want to see if there are better ways to make this computer more efficient and not constantly lagging

Sadly, This system does not have removable CPU or GPU chips or modules (all are soldered on). You can see them in this image (green chips in the right): Bottom side of the logic board.

Your only choice here is to swap out the logic board, but you are limited to a logic board that offers a ExpressCard/34 slot. That limits you to this: MacBook Pro 15" 2.8 GHz Core 2 Duo (March 2009) which isn't much of an upgrade.

I think its time to make the big leap to a newer i Core series system (new or used).

Going with a SSHD or SSD maybe a way to stretch this systems lifespan so you can save up. Frankly though, I would recommend the SSHD hybrid drive over a SSD like: Seagate SSHD. It will offer the speed improvements you're looking for and still offer the deeper storage of a traditional HD at a much lower cost.
